People who carry out domestic abuse often want to control their partner or ex-partner. Abusers want to find ways to put their partners down to make themselves feel better.

Often they can act in very jealous ways.

Has your parent or someone you know been…

stopped from seeing or talking to a friend by somebody else in the family
insulted, like being called stupid, thick, fat, ugly or useless
hit
hit and told it was their fault
threatened that someone they love will be hurt
burnt with a cigarette on purpose
timed when they’ve gone out to the shops
blamed for someone else losing their temper
forced or persuaded to be sexual when they didn't want to

Domestic abuse can start subtly and then build up. Take a look at the list above again. If you are in a relationship, has your partner ever done one of the things in the list?
