what is domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is when someone hurts or frightens another person in their family.

Domestic abuse can affect anybody wherever you live, however much money you have, whatever the colour of your skin or your religion. Most often it is by a man towards a woman he has a relationship with. It can also be by an ex-partner. It's sometimes done by a woman against a man or happens in same sex couples.

Domestic abuse can also be done by a brother or sister or someone else living within the family. Young people in the house are hurt too because they have to deal with the fear, upset and secrets that go with domestic abuse. Sometimes they are also made to see or do things against their will.

The abusive partner uses violent or cruel behaviour on purpose to try to get what they want. It is often called domestic violence, but violence is just the tip of the iceberg.
