how to help a friend

If a friend tells you that they are experiencing domestic abuse, there are many ways to help. Here’s a few suggestions…

Believe them and be understanding - chances are you're hearing about only a small part of what actually goes on
Inform yourself as much as possible about what advice and support is available
Be supportive - remind them that abuse is not OK and that they don't have to put up with it
Let them make their own decisions, even if they're not the ones you'd make!
You can go with them to get help - like speaking to a teacher or counsellor, seeing a doctor or school nurse or going to the police
Remember to look after yourself while you support your friend. Keep yourself safe physically and emotionally
